NOCTURNUM Choose a relationship, not a slogan
Start with a memory, place or person. Which plant belongs to that story? If you simply love the shape, that is enough too. You do not need to borrow a meaning that does not feel true. Be careful with online claims that one flower always represents the same thing across every culture.
Identify the actual plant
If botanical accuracy matters, bring your own clear photographs or a reliable plant reference. Include the leaf shape, stem and flower rather than only a cropped bloom. A rose, a peony and a camellia may share a mood in a reference folder but have different structures. Tell the artist whether accuracy or interpretation matters more.
Think in gestures
A single stem can bend, climb, hang or open. Describe the movement you want on the body before adding more species. Ask whether the leaves should frame an existing piece, follow a contour or remain a quiet standalone subject. This is where placement becomes part of the composition.
Edit the bouquet
Rank your elements. Which one must be present? Which could disappear without losing the idea? Our design preference is to make each addition earn its place. A small composition with one clear botanical subject can communicate more confidently than an overloaded list of plants, dates, names and decorative objects.
A stronger botanical brief
Try: ‘A branch from the tree outside my childhood home, following the outer arm, with the leaf shape kept recognizable. I want it quiet and slightly windswept, with room around it.’ That gives the artist a subject, a reason, a direction and permission to interpret. If a cultural or ceremonial motif is involved, research its context with knowledgeable sources before making it part of your design.
